PROJECT OBJECTIVES
MAIN OBJECTIVE:
The main objective is to trigger climate action that leads to an enhanced climate resilience in the city of Niamey
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE:
Through the provision of actionable urban climate change information, involving public and private stakeholders and connecting to climate finance schemes, the main aim of u_CLIP is to trigger climate action that leads to an enhanced climate resilience in the city of Niamey
We can explain the different objectives in this way:
EXPECTED RESULTS :
Result 1.1: a digital (web-based) open-data urban climate change information platform for the city of Niamey, tailored to suit the needs of the targeted user communities and continuously operated on the infrastructure of co-applicant ACMAD.
Result 1.2 : uptake by relevant public and private stakeholder communities of this platform and the urban climate information it contains, leading to the formulation of measures to enhance Niamey’s resilience with respect to the projected impacts of climate change
MAIN PLANNED ACTIVITIES :
Activity 1.1: participatory collection of wet bulb globe temperature data (WBGT, a thermal stress indicator) within Niamey, involving citizens in the process;
Activity 1.2: analysis and selection of regional climate model output (CORDEX Africa and others sources), considering historic periods and future scenarios (IPCC medium & high scenarios, time horizons 2030-2050-2100);
Activity 1.3: mapping Niamey’s land cover using satellite imagery (Proba-V) and participatory mapping (WUDAPT methodology, involving local citizens);
Activity 1.4: urban growth modelling to produce future (projected) land cover and urban growth scenarios for Niamey in 2050;
Activity 1.5: urban climate simulations with the Urban Climate model to produce input for the digital platform, using regional climate model output and present/future Niamey urban land cover maps as input (see above);
Activity 1.6: architectural (IT) design and development of the digital urban climate information platform – initially as a pilot version and subsequently working towards the operational version;
Activity 1.7: outreach and training regarding the use of the urban climate information platform to the user communities;
Activity 1.8: explore ways to exploit the climate information platform in the context of applications for international climate finance.
TARGET GROUP :
We aim for as broad and inclusive as possible an involvement of stakeholders, including :
- Health sector
- Energy sector
- Industry / construction sector
- Authorities :
- Youth & education
- Civil society
- National contact persons in the domain of international climate finance, e.g. the Niger National Designated Authority to the Green Climate Fund, to ensure sustainability after the end of the project
